Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is perhaps the Eating Disorder that is best known to the public. It is a very dangerous illness that causes a person to intentionally deprive themself of food. This is potentially life threatening as people with this eating disorder can literally starve themselves to death. Somebody with Anorexia is unable to ever reach a point where they feel "thin" enough. They are driven by an obsession to lose weight, and this is the defining feature of the eating disorder. If somebody is about 15% below a healthy weight for their height and age and are refusing to make healthy improvements to this they might be considered to have Anorexia. Even though they might be emaciated and severely undernourished the person with the anorexia eating disorder remains convinced that they are unacceptably "fat". Their entire self-esteem and self-worth is tied up in their body weight and how they perceive their body. Weight loss gives an anorexic a sense of achievement and control, whereas weight gain leaves them feeling out of control and worthless. Read more about «Anorexia Nervosa».

Binge Eating Disorder

A Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by recurring episodes where the patient eats abnormally large amounts of food. Somebody with this illness will eat regardless of their physical need to eat; They will eat if they're not hungry and continue eating even while feeling uncomfortably full. The physical consequences of leaving this eating disorder untreated can be severe as the excessive food intake can lead to a number of health complications such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other problems. People with a Binge Eating Disorder are more likely to develop another eating disorder such as Bulimia nervosa or Anorexia nervosa and are also at risk of developing other psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders. Compulsive Eating Disorder

The Compulsive Eating Disorder leaves the patient incapable of controlling their food intake. They may eat too much, too often, too fast, eat non-stop, or develop other patterns of eating that they cannot control. Compulsive eaters often crave sweet foods and use the "sugar rush" to elevate their mood. Compulsive eaters can experience very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms if they do not eat the food that they are craving. Read more about «Compulsive Eating».

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterized by cycles of binge eating (similar to above) followed by "purging". Purging is a process of trying to get rid of the food they have just eaten and can take many forms such as vomiting, laxative abuse, taking enemas, or excessive exercise. Like other Eating Disorders Bulimia Nervosa can result in severe physical health problems as a result of malnutrition. It can also lead to psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. Patients who have Bulimia Nervosa are also at a higher risk of developing other psychiatric problems and for displaying dangerous and impulsive behaviour. These self-destructive behaviours include sexual promiscuity, kleptomania, self-mutilation and substance abuse. Read more about «Bulimia Nervosa».

Orthorexia

Orthorexics often refuse to eat food and become very thin from malnutrition. This means that Orthorexia can be confused with Anorexia. It can be differentiated by examining why the person is starving themself. A person with Orthorexia is obsessed with eating only pure and healthy food. They will refuse to eat anything that they perceive to be contaminated or unhealthy. Remember that an Anorexic wants only to be thin - now we can see how these Eating Disorders are different. Although a desire to eat healthily may sound perfectly acceptable, and even a good idea, a person with this Eating Disorder takes this desire to a very unhealthy extreme. They obsess about eating only the right sort of foods to the point where they are unable to eat in public, or to enjoy normal food at all. They can end up starving themselves, just like an Anorexic, because they believe that eating no food at all is better than eating "contaminated" food. Read more about «Orthorexia».

Bigorexia

Bigorexia is an eating disorder that is very similar to the condition known as "body dysmorphic disorder". A person with this eating disorder develops an unhealthy obsession with their muscle size and overall physique. In an attempt to gain more and more muscle the patient will gym excessively and begin restricting his/her food intake dramatically. Read more about «Bigorexia».

Obesity

Obesity has been linked to a wide range of physical health problems. Obese people can also develop a number of psychological problems such as depression, social phobia, or anxiety. In an effort to deal with their obesity a person may also develop a life-threatening eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Obesity kills hundreds of thousands of Americans each year and is a critical health problem the world over. Read more about «Obesity».

Diabulimia

Diabulimia is a form of Eating Disorder where a diabetic deliberately restricts their insulin intake in order to control their weight. It is thought that as much as 33% of all American female type 1 diabetics have experimented with this form of weight control.
