Therapy will involve a comprehensive plan offered by members of multiple clinical disciplines. You'll be attended to by doctors who monitor your physical health, receive psychosocial counseling from therapists, and nutritional counseling from dieticians. In some circumstances the diagnosing clinician will recommend that you be admitted to hospital before joining the full program of the Eating Disorder treatment rehab.
Anorexia Nervosa Treatment
The treatment processs for anorexia nervosa is usually provided in three phases:
- Firstly the patient is stabilized medically and any nutritional deficits addressed
- Secondly the psychological aspects of the illness are worked with. This includes their self-esteem problems and distorted perception of their body.
- Thirdly a comprehensive aftercare program will be employed to ensure lasting rehabilitation
If an eating disorder is diagnosed early then treatment is more likely to be successful. Certain psychotropic medication is sometimes prescribed, but usually only after the patients weight has been stabilized. One type of these medications are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's) which are also known for their anti-depressant properties.
Patients who have severe weight loss may be treated in hospital where they will receive a proper feeding plan that addresses their nutritional needs. The hospital staff will usually monitor their eating to ensure that they are not avoiding their food. In rare cases intravenous feeding may be required. Once the patient has started to return to normal weight and is no longer suffering from malnutrition they will start their psychotherapy. Core issues of anorexia include a low self-esteem and distorted thought patterns (particularly around self-image). Therapy can make gains in helping the patient become free of these psychological issues. Families can be invited to participate in a portion of the therapy and will also receive instruction on how to support the patient.
Bulimia Nervosa Treatment
Bulimia Nervosa is usually treated by establishing a fixed eating routine and challenging the unhealthy cycle of binge eating and purging. While the patient adheres to this eating pattern they will receive a number of therapeutic interventions including nutritional counseling, psychosocial counseling, and be attended to by doctors. The bulimic patient will be helped to develop improved attitudes relating to their eating patterns. Exercise in moderate amounts may form part of the program, but generally this will be limited in order to prevent it being a purging mechanism. The patient will also be helped to resolve any issues relating to depression or anxiety.

It has been shown that certain psychotropic medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants can be helpful for people with bulimia nervosa. They are also useful in helping to regulate feelings of depression and anxiety when psychotherapy has not been effective by itself. Because these medications make it easier for the patient to cope with life they may help to prevent relapse. Continuing research into the relative effectiveness of the various treatment options is underway.
